Cancellations and fees

I understand cancellations happen. People get sick, and our schedules get crazy! I am asking that you give a 24 HOURS notice by email at if there are any cancellations. Lessons that are canceled less than 24 hours in advance will not be refunded. If you would like to be placed on a list to get an extra lesson in if there is a cancellation, please let me know by responding to this e-mail. If the lesson is canceled due to inclement weather or my own sickness, I will reach out to reschedule at no additional fee. If no reschedule can be agreed upon, the lesson I cancel will be refunded.

Inclement weather

If weather affects our lesson, I will cancel at no cost. If you cannot get to the lesson due to the weather, please try to let me know as far in advance as you can.  I will email you ahead of time if I cannot get to a lesson, but if no email is sent, please assume I will be coming. Coming from New England, snow does not scare me away!

The music books I use are all available online or at local music stores. Please see my Piano Lessons and Voice Lessons pages for my recommended list of books. Other music that has been assigned to your lesson should be paid for, unless specified. I also use different methods in each lesson, which do not require the recommended books. If you have questions, please let me know. Additional materials, including scale cards, flashcards, and notes for keyboards are not included in the lesson cost.

Learning differences

I have learned throughout time that not all lessons will go as planned, and that there is a learning curve for every student. I am prepared to learn and accommodate any difficulties in learning If there is a lesson that does not go well, I will contact the family either in person after the lesson or will follow up with an email. The email would include a detailed explanation of what did not go well, what did go well, and the options moving forward. That next lesson would be free, but if things did not improve, we will need to discuss other options. I want each student to have a successful and happy musical journey.

Practice is essential to your musical development and is expected in between each lesson.  A practice sheet and instructions will be sent home with the younger students each week. At the end of each month, the children get to pick out a prize from the prize bag if they have covered each practice box.

For older students, I do not think a system like that is needed. I therefore expect students to hold themselves accountable and practice scales, arpeggios, and a recently learned song at least three times a week for 20 minutes at a time. This will be rewarded through performance, and possibly some new songs to learn for fun! The harder work put in, the more fun songs we can do!

Progress reports will be made available upon request. If you would like regular lesson notes, please respond to this e-mail. If you would like a one-time progress report, please notify me before your next lesson.

Every year, I will host a Spring recital in May at First United Methodist Church. I also will be emailing students if additional opportunities arise. There are open mic nights with Music and Arts, and any of my students are welcome to join there, as well as at the Front Porch. I love to prepare students for different things and have prepared students to audition for “The Voice”, talent shows, you tube videos, music videos, competitions, and even musicals and operas.

Other services

In addition to traditional and online music classes, Kate Wisbey Music creates theme-based birthday parties (superheroes, “under the sea,” princesses, pirates, Star Wars, etc.) with a musical curriculum for families and neighborhoods. During COVID-19, we held musical birthday parties and a “porch music class” that adhered to public health guidelines. Please reach out to me if you’re interested in setting up a socially distant but fun musical party!
