Meet Kate

I am a classically trained pianist and singer, having earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music from Christopher Newport University in 2012. I have two certifications (American Montessori Society Primary and Reggio Emilia) to teach Music Together children’s music classes and Orff methodology anywhere within the United States. For the past two years, I have been the musical director of the International School of Charlottesville in addition to offering part-time private lessons and piano and voice coaching at my studio.

My specialty is working with beginners and intermediate students. I especially love working with kids, but my students have ranged in age from 3 to 76 years old. Every one of my students has unique interests and talents, and I have the certified training, patience, and approach to cater to the individual needs of all my students. Some have gone on to become music majors in college, and one even auditioned for American Idol! The highlight of our year is when we celebrate student progress during our annual winter and spring recitals

Please explore these pages, view my rates and policies, and email me about setting up a time to chat. I would love to hear from you!

In my free time, I love to sing with the Oratorio Society of Virginia, an renowned chorus out of Charlottesville, and swing dance with a group called SwingCville.

My approach

Kate Wisbey Music proudly offers piano and voice lessons that are in tune with your interests, goals, and dreams for learning music. I believe in fostering a love of music and giving students an outlet for this expression. That is why I enthusiastically support all learning and musical styles and help my students build confidence beyond the studio. To see my students grow and develop as musicians from not being able to play a note to performing in one of our two annual concerts or at a local open mic is one of my greatest joys!

I offer lessons at my studio, but if it is more convenient for you, I will drive to your house. I even offer lessons via Zoom and Facetime if you would rather do it that way. During COVID-19, I began doing a mix of online and in-person lessons. Learn more about my flexible approach to piano and voice lessons. Let’s chat to work out the details.

What parents and students say

“I have watched Ms. Wisbey employ a combination of knowledge, experience, and what I call 'instincts' to meet my daughter’s unique needs and encourage her interest in music…I have found these piano lessons therapeutic as well as an opportunity for my child to learn useful skills in a non-judgmental and supportive environment. I could not be more satisfied with my daughter’s progress. Ms. Wisbey demonstrates both professionalism and a genuine interest in my daughter’s well-being. Her lessons are well-planned, but she is also flexible and able to adapt to the day’s circumstances. I have also observed Ms. Wisbey interacting with adults from all walks of life and am pleased to have her as a role model for my child.”
- Mallika F. Rodriguez

“Kate is a very inspiring teacher! She’s easy to get to know and get along with and makes you feel at home with her immediately. You can easily see that she loves music and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others. Kate is organized and prepared for each lesson, but she’s also able to go with the flow and adapt…When asked, ‘What’s the best thing about Miss Kate?’ my son’s response was, ‘She’s fun!’
I highly recommend Kate as a piano and voice teacher for both adults and children.”
- Janie Perrone

“She…provided lessons to two of my grandchildren who are age 10 and 11. As children go, these two are in the highly spirited category and Kate immediately engaged them with musical exercises that complimented their personalities and learning styles. Her method of teaching music to children is positive, encouraging, and results-oriented. Soon after their first lesson they wanted to perform their music without prompting. They look forward to their lessons with her and I feel this has been most likely one of the most significant learning experiences of their lives. Kate has my highest recommendation.”
